What do you think about Twain's descriptions of Jim's actions as a boy? Is it more realistic than the descriptions of boys we have read so far? In most children's books, Jim's behavior would have been punished. He would probably end up in hell. Instead, what happens to Jim? What do you think it tells us about Twain's criticism of his own culture as well as British education? From both stories by Twain, what do you think his opinion of American masculinity was? Did he support the individualistic self-made man? Look at the end of this story for clues.
