STOP: Before you read anything else, please understand that this discussion board (all three parts of it) are about FLORIDA'S GOVERNMENT not the federal government in Washington D.C . Some students get confused and write about the branches of the federal government. That's easy to do because they are often called the same thing (in other words Florida has a Senate and a House of Representatives and the national government does too). Please don't do that - they are different things, with different rules and terms of office, etc. This discussion board is all about Florida. Thanks!

In this first part of our discussion board, each of you is going to be assigned a  branch of Florida's government. It will be based on the first letter of your last name (I have attempted to divide the class roughly in thirds). You will find your assigned branch below. During this first week I want you to do some research on your assigned branch. The only source you will absolute need to read is the Florida Constitution Links to an external site.. If you are assigned the Legislative Branch you'll want to read Article III, Executive Article IV and Judicial Article V. You may also want to look at this site summarizing the Florida government Links to an external site.or this one that does something similar Links to an external site..You can also use other internet sources if you would like, so long as they are reputable. Ideally, please post your response below rather than uploading it as a word document/PDF, since that's harder for your classmates to read. I would like you to compose a 300-500 word post that summarizes the following about your branch:

1) Who is in your branch? What people and what offices are included? How are they selected? What are the limits for how long they can serve?

2) What are the list of powers that your branch has? What does your branch do?

3) How can your branch check the powers of the other two branches? (This may be more difficult to find for some branches than others).

4) What is the single most important power that your branch has, in your opinion?

If your last name starts with the letter A through the letter J your branch is: Executive

If your last name starts with the letter K through the letter R your branch is: Judicial

If your last name starts with the letter S through the letter Z your branch is: Legislative

You can score up to 20 points based on your use of evidence, the thoroughness and accuracy of your answer, and your correct usage of grammar/spelling.

Citations: If you use any outside material (which seems quite likely), please just put at the end of your post what sources you have used. You can use any citation format (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) that you'd like. And, as always, if you directly quote someone, please put it in quotes. Thanks!
