Interest groups in the United States play an important role when it comes to pushing new legislation, stopping legislation or making their voices heard on legislation. Billions of dollars pour into campaigns from interest groups trying to have influence over Congressional officials. Interest groups want to have enough power to where they can have access to political figures. The key to powerful interest groups is “access”, meaning that the interest group can have a conversation with Congressional officials that are important to the interest group.

Assignment #2 lookup an interest group that either interest you or have a curiosity to know more about, whether it is the National Rifle Association, American Civil Liberties Union, Sierra Club or AARP, and I want you to put yourself as the head of that organization. As the head of the organization, I want you to introduce your organization (what it represents, main constituents in the organization, main office location, number of members), lobby an important piece of current federal legislation that your organization is either trying to make sure it passes into law or make sure it does not pass.
