Preparation for the Scholarly Paper

Summary and Critical Analysis of an Article in the Professional Literature

This activity is designed to help you practice the skills you’ll use in critically reading the professional literature related to your selected topic for your scholarly paper.

Step 1: Select one of the journal articles you have selected for your scholarly paper

Step 2: Read the article and complete the Article Summary Form.

Read the article first to get a sense of it.  Then, complete the Article Summary Form.  If necessary, read the article a second and/or a third time and add to your article summary form.

Step 3: Read the article again

This time, read the article more closely.  Note your reactions, questions, responses to the points, process, and perspective of the author(s).

Step 4: Write a critical analysis of the article

A critical analysis is more than just a summary of an article – it reflects an active and critical reader who is thinking while reading.  Briefly summarize the author(s)’ main points but then focus on your reaction to what you read.  Do not use “I”. Some examples of things you might cover are: Does it make sense to you?  Is the article written in academic language?  Does the background research seem sound to you?  Is the article readable and accessible?  Does the author come to conclusions that are based in the data or arguments presented?  Once you know your main points, frame the paper with a strong introductory paragraph and a good conclusion. Incorporate these steps into the handout on the Canvas, for Critical Analysis.

Step 5: Review and revise at least two separate times before turning in the analysis next week

Use the skills we’ve been working on (conceptual maps, rhetorical triangle, grammar basics, to organize your paper.

APA citations in text, editing and revising) to write an interesting, engaging, and well-designed 2-3 page analysis.

You can find the grading rubric posted on Canvas

This paper is in APA format

I look forward – as always – to reading your work!
