Instructions:

Examine how domestic factors (such as civil-military alliance, guerrilla organizations, social and economic conditions, political polarization, violence) and international factors (such as US support to elites and military governments, and USSR and Cuba support to the guerrillas) have hindered democracy in El Salvador during most of the 20th century. Your answer must be supported with historical evidence from the readings and lectures

Examine the causes for the breakdown of democracy in 1964, the evolution of the dictatorship (1964-85), and the reasons for the return to democracy in Brazil.

Compare the presidencies of Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Ignacio Lula Da Silva in Brazil. Please take into consideration economic, social and political aspects. For this question, you must read the articles by De Souza, Hunter, Hunter and Power, Power and Morais and Saad-Filho.

Question 10:

What has changed in Brazilian politics since Lula’s 2002 electoral victory? What are the characteristics of the Brazilian democracy? What are the implications of Lula’s election for Brazilian democracy? In answering this question, you must read Hunter’s article “Brazil’s New Direction.”
