Let’s be Fair about the Existence of the American Dream

The faith that anyone could move from rags to riches with enough guts and initiative, hard work and nose to the grindstone was once at the core of the American dream. The American dream is the belief that everyone regardless of where they were born, may achieve their own version of success in a society where status seeking is possible for everyone in which it can achieved by sacrifice, hardworking, and risk-taking. On the other hand, a few critics believe that it is no longer viable because of the new era and technological advancement. Overall, the American Dream gears towards the theory of working hard to earn substantial income to own a house, support a family, educate the children, and invest towards retirement.

In the article “Is the American Dream Over?” by Cal Thomas, the author argues that even though it sounds like the American dream disappeared and no longer exist, it is still achievable and attainable if people are willing to work hard and sacrifice. Thomas started his article by defining his own version of the American dream as creating a great life than previous generations. In the article written by Brandon’s king called “The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on hold?” The author highlights how important the American dream is and believes that people who work hard enough become successful and more likely to build better lives for themselves as well as their family. Throughout his article, he puts forward his belief that the American dream is still very much alive and needs people to work hard in order to achieve it.

Brandon King begins building his credibility with personal facts and reputable sources, citing convincing facts and statistics, and successfully employing emotional appeals. In his article, Brandon sets the stage by describing the true state of the American dream as of today, then he gives his personal opinion about the fact of the existence of the American dream by confirming that the American dream is very much alive for those who work hard enough by claiming that” I believe that the ideals and values of the American dream are very much alive. “He points out to the great recession and the economic hardship that might killed off the American dream.

Throughout his piece, King uses many strong sources that strengthen his credibility and appeal to ethos, as well as build his argument. These sources include, “a 2009 New York Times survey found that 72 percent of Americans still believed it was possible to start poor, work hard, and become rich in America,” and another recent study that showed “a decrease in home ownership from 69% in 2005 to about 66.5% in 2010, and increase in renter households of 1.1 million.” Citing these sources boosts King’s credibility by showing that he has done his work and has provided facts and statistics, as well as expert opinions to support his claim. He also uses personal examples from his own perspective as well as he recognizes others’ perspectives to introduce and support the issue.

Adding to his ethos appeals, King uses strong appeals to logos, with many facts and statistics and logical progressions of ideas. He points out facts about the existence of the

American dream and its persistence between the past and now in which he says that “As a nation, we have dealt with economic downturns in the past, and the American dream has faced trials and tests before.” These facts introduce and support the idea that the American dream is still alive, it might have been changed. Nevertheless, is the key of climbing out of the great recession, overcoming inequality, and achieving true prosperity. Along with strong logos appeals, King effectively makes appeals to pathos throughout his article. His introduction in full of emotionally-charged words and phrases that create a sympathetic image; King states that “we may have genuine inequality issues and sizable divide between the rich and poor.” King strives to persuade his readers and succeeds to provide reliable sources as well as statistics and facts to support his claim as well as the way he presented his valid and reasonable arguments was more accurate.

In the article “Is the American dream over,” written by Cal Thomas. The author brings up some really interesting points in which Cal explains that the American dream seems dead for many Americans as well as he describes that it is dead for many because it might have been changed and no longer easy to obtain. According to Cal, the American dream is not over yet as long as there are people having dreams and goals to be achieved. Cal employs different appeals in his article to strengthen his credibility. However, King presented effectively much more valid arguments, reasonable and accurate reasoning.

On the contrary, the American Dream asserts that paying little mind to what social class you were brought into the world to there will consistently be equivalent freedom for all. In actuality there is little proof to help this, however what we can gauge is the lot of imbalance the U.S. has instead of what we have been advised to accept. The Gini Coefficient shows that the "U.S. disparity was more noteworthy in 2018 by over 23.4% contrasted with 1970" as the U.S Census Bureau estimated, from my arrangement equivalent freedom would not have this affected distinction between the top and the base class. The American Dream is not, at this point pertinent, circumstances are different thus has innovation. Industrialization has caused individuals to lose positions because of an expansion of education, also that more positions currently look for knowledge.

On the same note, not all Americans are at similar financial level, and in this manner not all get similar training and in spite of the fact that schooling is wide open, not all instruction is a similar quality. Training fluctuates on the diverse climate that one is brought into the world in and is reflected by private isolation as Putnam claims in the book Our Kids "quantitative investigations have reliably discovered incredibly wide contrasts in scholastic results between schools went to by princely children and schools went to by their ruined partners" (pg.356). Therefore, these kinds of measures should be represented, as obviously it will be more diligently for somebody at the base to get preferable quality instruction over somebody who was brought into the world on top of the pecking order to have a superior possibility at succeeding.

To sum up, the American dream must be kept alive and should exist anytime for those who are willing to work and have the urge to change their situations regardless of where they born or what social class they belong to because everyone has the right to thrive and succeed in the life, and deserves the opportunity to follow happiness and prosperity. Moreover, it is the ability for each one to write his own future and have the control of the path that anyone may choose. Nonetheless, it is important note that the American Dream has changed radically into a matter of expectation rather than a reality because of the increment of disparities. Individuals will in general accept that there are numerous chances that will lead you to prevail with difficult work, yet it is more than the work one places in, the monetary framework is very separated and doesn't allow an individual to ascend the stepping stool easily.
