- How does the idea of an artwork change or become dictated by its controlled surroundings? Does a work truly exist outside of its determined circumstances (for example, in the case of the controlled environment needed for Irwin’s Discs)?
- Turrell states that he is not trying to “push the boundaries of science” or to try to “demonstrate scientific principles,” but to deal with perception, though he does state that it’s “a matter of intent.” (Turrell 574) Do you think this position can be seen in his works and in this writing? Does his intent to merely “pose questions” and not answer questions distinguish art from science? How does intention play a part in his art works?
