HW4: Researching Different Mgt Careers
Researching Different Careers (this assignment is modified from Chapter 10, 12th ed., p. 300. Please read the instructions below and follow!)
Because a manager's job varies from department to department within firms, as well as among firms, it is virtually impossible to write a generic description of a manager's job. If you are contemplating becoming a manager, you may find it very helpful to spend time on the job with several managers learning firsthand what they do.
Assignment:
1. Make an appointment with managers fromĀ two firms, preferable 2 different firms. If you can meet them at their place of business, EXCELLENT! If not a phone call will have to suffice.
2. Ask the managers the following questions:
a. What do you do in your job?
b. What do you like most and least about your job? Why?
c. What motivates you at your job?
d. What skills do you need in your job?
e. How much education does your job require?
f. What advice do you have for someone thinking about pursuing a career in management?
3. Summarize your findings in a 2 page report and include answer to these questions:
a. What motivation theory(ies) apply to the managers answers?
b. Is management a realistic field of study for you? Why? If not, what might be a better career choice for you? Why?
