Media Influences on Public Opinion (70 Points)

Apply the ideological analysis of Roland Barthes to a single advertisement or ad campaign, as follows:

  • First, choose the advertisement(s) and describe comprehensively the denotations and connotations of the ad(s).
  • Next, critically evaluate how each advertisement conveys the dominant ideology (or, more likely, numerous ideologies). Make sure that you point out the ideological advancement of consumer society, and also discuss a second or more forms of ideological contents transmitted by the advertisement to audiences.
  • In the critical phase of your essay, be sure to acknowledge any counterarguments to the ideologies that you analyze. For example, as discussed in this module, positive representations of homosexuality may, for social conservatives, transmit liberal ideology.

Your paper must:

  • Be 3-4 pages in length.
  • Be well written.
  • Include at least three references from the readings or outside sources, cited in proper APA style. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these sources.
  • Follow the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
