Goals for the Assignment

Short essays provide an opportunity for you to practice your writing and organizational skills while engaging with the course materials.

Overview

Jean Kilbourne's film Killing Us Softly 4 provides a close examination of gender norms in advertisements. She focuses on themes: trends in the stories that ads tell that surface again and again and accumulate to teach the culture messages about what they should expect from males and females.

Prompt

For this essay, first view this collection of advertisements and pick any 2 of the ads to analyze.  Once you've chosen two ads to analyze, write an essay and explaining what you think Jean Kilbourne would say about each ad (Kilbourne is the speaker in Killing Us Softly 4).  For each ad you should have a minimum of 150 words (300 total for the assignment). Please make specific reference to points from Killing Us Softly 4 and try to use some of the terms Kilbourne uses in the film. The Killing Us Softly 4 Studyguide could be helpful in reviewing some of her main points.  To identify which ad you are talking about you may either refer to it by number or describe the ad in a sentence.
