It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.

Module 1 has given you the opportunity to learn a great deal about play and the undeniable role it plays in healthy child development and learning. While some of the research, especially on the neuroscience of play, is quite recent, many of the “big ideas” being discussed have been widely known for decades. In spite of this, respect for play in all its depth and glory is still lacking in many sectors of society and even in environments where children spend a great deal of time. 

So how can early childhood professionals best be supported in understanding play’s critical role in child development and learning? What professional development strategies best convey this message and truly connect with each early educator’s personal experiences and philosophy? You will have the opportunity to reflect on and implement just that in your assignment.

Consider the following scenario:You are hoping to be accepted into the Early Childhood Professional Development Registry for your state. With that in mind, you have decided to submit the ½-day professional development workshop you created on play as part of your professional portfolio. • Presentation: What Does the Research Say?
  • Why play is important to children
  • Summarize your stance on this topic in one slide using bullet points and the Notes section.
  • How play promotes healthy development across the domains

Note: Include at least three slides for each domain (physical, social-emotional, language, and cognitive plus one set of three slides for a combination of domains).

• Slide 1 – A bulleted summary of what the research says about how play promotes healthy development in the specific developmental domain or in multiple domains
• Slide 2 – A scenario illustrating children engaged in a play experience (or experiences) related to the specific domain (or multiple domains) indicating the specific type(s) of play, e.g., block play, dramatic/pretend play, etc.
• Slide 3 – At least two resources you used that you would recommend and why. These can be resources from the module or ones you identify.
• Hands-On Activities (two hands-on activities in which you will engage with professional development  participants):
  • A warm-up/icebreaker
  • A content-infused, small group activity
• Extending the Learning
  • At least one annotated citation for a media resource (video or audio) that you will share with the group to foster understanding and inspire enthusiasm along with three to five discussion points you will use with the group related to the media
