Assignment: Presenting Play!
It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.
Leo F. Buscaglia, author and professor of special education
Module 1 has given you the opportunity to learn a great deal about play and the undeniable role it plays in healthy child development and learning. While some of the research, especially on the neuroscience of play, is quite recent, many of the “big ideas” being discussed have been widely known for decades. In spite of this, respect for play in all its depth and glory is still lacking in many sectors of society and even in environments where children spend a great deal of time.
So how can early childhood professionals best be supported in understanding play’s critical role in child development and learning? What professional development strategies best convey this message and truly connect with each early educator’s personal experiences and philosophy? You will have the opportunity to reflect on and implement just that in your assignment.
Consider the following scenario:You are hoping to be accepted into the Early Childhood Professional Development Registry for your state. With that in mind, you have decided to submit the ½-day professional development workshop you created on play as part of your professional portfolio. In preparation, you review these resources on effective professional development Download effective professional development.
