The story surrounds around the theme of ‘genetics’. Questions such as ownership of a human’s genes without his consent by way of patenting are raised. But perhaps the most significant issue highlighted in this novel seems to be the notion of transgenic discoveries which means using genes of one species in another. This phenomenon is very well depicted by showing a young boy who has the quirkiness to climb trees and also suffers from abnormal hair growth (Maslin, 2006). He is, in effect, a transgenic species, partially human and partially chimpanzee who was given birth to in a laboratory during a scientific experiment that got out of control (Maslin, 2006) (Memmott, 2006). The novel makes one wonder that what if one day hybrid species are being made and we see a sub-human creature being raised in a family. The story can, in some ways, be related to the “Planet of Apes” and epic of its time (Memmott, 2006).

This world is depicted as fast and furious and constantly evolving such that it is getting beyond human control (Newman, 2007).
