This essay “Cultural Background” discusses cultural values and traditions of African Americans in the Southeast States. Each person’s personality is shaped by the beliefs and values which are ingrained in specific cultures. The concept of culture has a rich theoretical background. Its definition, framework, interpretation and application differ according to perspective. Diversity in culture is eminent and is closely evaluated in terms of their impact and effect on a person’s life. Thereby, personal expectations also conform to what is exhibited by each unique individual depending on their traditional ways of life. The rich cultural values and traditions of African Americans in the Southeast States have distinct characteristics which continue to influence the behavior and personality development of future generations. The Memodata Corporation define cultural background as “a collective expression of all behavior patterns acquired and socially transmitted through symbols”. The family continues to be the basic institution that influences the cultural orientation of an individual. As an African American male in one of the Southeast States, one can attest that the family continues to provide biological, emotional, financial and psychological support to the children. Parents have strong influence in molding the children into holistic individuals encouraging creative expression of thoughts and interests. The close family ties shared provide emotional support which encourage delving into various fields of endeavor.
