Daytime alertness would ensure that the students are studying properly on the campus and do not face any problem relating to their health or studies (National Sleep Foundation 2011). According to Carskadon education on sleep hygiene can help an individual to know about the factors which are affecting his sleep. Carskadon puts forward different changes in life which can help an individual to achieve sleep hygiene. Caffeine and stimulants should be limited by an individual so that it does not alter the sleep-wake cycle. The sleep-wake cycle should be closely regulated by an individual so that he does not have to change his routine every now and then. And lastly, he should not practice strenuous activities before he goes to sleep. All these activities ensure that perfect sleep hygiene is achieved. This should be kept in mind by the educational authorities of the UMASS Boston to implement the program to enlighten the students. If a person does not maintain these steps in a college then it is possible that the student would suffer from sleep problems like insomnia. Insomnia can further lead to the sluggishness of the mind. This sluggishness would result in other academic problems. Because of these problems, the health officials should ensure that the students are getting the right knowledge about sleep hygiene. This would help to increase the knowledge among the students along with the possible benefits of sleep hygiene on the academics (Carskadon et al178-179).

Moreover, another research carried out by Pilcher and Walter showed that sleep is directly related to the cognitive performance of individuals. The result of the experiment done by Pilcher and Walter clearly showed that the participants who were deprived of sleep did not perform well when given a cognitive task whereas the ones who did get sleep properly performed well in comparison. The participants who were sleep deprived considered their effort and concentration to be far more than the ones who were not sleep deprived.&nbsp.
