Introduction of the author: Octavia E. Butler was an African American born in Pasadena, California, 1947 in a strict Christian Baptist family. At an early age she suffered from the death of her father and consequently, her mother had to work as a maid to support the family. Octavia was a dyslexic and shy child, but she never deterred her love for reading and writing due to her deficiency. She was a keen reader since childhood and started writing stories at an early age of 10, thus, won many writing contest till her college. Ever since the beginning of her writing career in 1970s, her work majorly revolved around African American spiritualism with the strong essence of science fiction. Her first work was published in 1976, Patternmaster and it was written in a 5 volume series (Lennard, 7). Octavia Butler has acknowledged herself as a mature science fiction writer through her work. She also has introduced the exceptional and innovative examples of telepathy, dystopia and travelling through time in her novels. She has thrived as a female writer and signified the feelings of fears, pain and apprehensions in African Americans due to racial discrimination. Her writing showed perfection from every aspect and she spent many years. struggling and making a name in writer’s community. She died at the age of 58 in Seattle ("Octavia E. Butler "). Ideas and Major themes: Octavia E. Butler’s renowned novel “The Parable of Sower” is categorized as dystopian in science fiction category. The post-apocalyptic novel presents the characters in multi-racial manner. Thus, it revolves around many themes like poverty, scarcity of food and water, unlawful state of America, social injustice, degradation of humanity, violence, lack of morality and above of all origination of new religion “Earthseed”. Butler said the idea behind the novel The Parable of Sower was to accumulate the neglected problems prevailing in the world and to give them thirty years from now, to become full-fledged disasters (“Brave New Worlds” 164). Thesis: The aim of this research paper is to assess the parental influence in terms of religion in “The Parable of the Sower” and to observe how parents participate in keeping the religious belief of their children intact. Protagonist and Faith: Lauren Olamina, the protagonist belongs to African American Christian family. Though, her father is a minister, but after the church being burnt and the collapsing situation of the society, she doesn’t belief in the God his father preaches. “Today is our birthday- my fifteenth and my father's fifty-fifth. Tomorrow, I'll try to please him- him and the community and God.” (Butler, 1) Through the following lines one can ascertain that Lauren wanted to please his father only for the sake of his favour and out of parental love, therefore, she pretended through her obedience and subordination in his believed religion. Although, she wanted to believe in Christianity, but the prevailing situation of her community, inside and outside of Robeldo, and the mere role religion barred it. “It comes to me when I try to be my father's daughter [.....]At least three years ago, my father's God stopped being my God. His church stopped being my church (Butler, 1).
