Non-whites living in the depicted neighborhood are placed in bad life conditions by the social system existing in the country. It is clear that the balance of power between white and non-white citizens is unequal, for racial minorities are isolated in separate areas of the cities, with discrimination beginning as early as at schools: the movie shows the school with predominantly black students. According to Coser (1967, p.200), “each social system contains elements of strain and of potential conflict”, and the movie shows two trajectories of potential conflict development. Firstly, the profound racial conflict occurs between whites and blacks: though racial minority members like Michael and his family are not discriminated on legislative level, they are implicitly limited in their opportunities and thus are forced to live in depressing and impoverished social environment gnawed by drug abuse, high crime rates and little prospects for better life. Secondly, there is an internal conflict occurring inside the depicted group triggered by the competition for the resources – money, drugs, influence and even women (in a case of Michael’s sister). The protagonist is forced into criminal activity by the need to survive and eventually elaborates on a good plan for getting out of the social system he lives in. This topic has been rather relevant in sociological perspective recently, as the balance of power sets whites as a controlling force over racial minorities creating a basis for a potential conflict.
