This is the first part of the pentology that Munīf authored. This paper will present a summary of the novel and a critical reflection of the themes it addresses.
In the opening chapter, Munīf introduces the reader to an Arab village in the Arabian Penisula whereby, the local people are living in conformity to the Arab culture and their religion (1). Their only predicament is the fact the area is a desert and water scarcity is a salient problem. The vivid description of the village life presented by the author through his oral narrative style offer the reader a clear picture of the undisturbed life in the Wadi described. However, these conditions do not last as Munīf later introduces the reader to the discovery of oil in this specific Wadi. This discovery is unknown to the local people, but is a secret open to the American. Equipped with the right technology and strategy, Americans strategize on the venture of exploiting the discovered oil. Their arrival into the village surprises many of the villagers who lack awareness of the purpose of the foreigners (26). Notably, the emir of the people warns the locals against disrupting the foreigner’s activities. Munīf describes the emerging restlessness of the people after the arrival of the Americans. Although they had speculations that the Americans had come to solve their water problems, they were greatly mistaken.
