These were caused by the institutional changes which took place at different times. Knowledge acquisition has been a very controversial issue in the society (Fort and Kates 217). At certain times, not everyone was free to get all the information that they required. Meaning, authors were only supposed to write books on certain topics which would be accepted by the society at the time.

Because of the changing situations, writers of literature were producing works which were quite distinct from one another. It is for this reason that the writers in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries were concentrating on different issues. For instance, Don Juan is one of the plays which were written in the 17th century. By featuring Don Juan as the protagonist, the play emphasized the theme of religious conservatism which was witnessed during the century. At that time in history, literature was supposed to focus on the major issues affecting people. Since the society was under the control of the Roman Catholicism, it was important for the writers to come up and author books and stories in a direct reflection of such a situation (Berlin 286). Thus, by doing this, it would be better for them to contribute towards the transformation of the society and salvaging it from the superstitious Catholicism which had dominated nearly all aspects of human life.

Later, in the 18th century, literature had to change and adapt to the prevailing conditions at the time. With the wave of romanticism, everything had to be done in line with the requirements of the roman authorities. The Roman Empire still dominated the society. Thus, all writers had to concentrate on such relevant topics. However, as critics, writers would make compositions in a direct opposition to whatever was going on at the time.
