Upon leaving though she witnesses a murder where a victim was getting slain by attackers who seemed to have shiny eyes. Terrified, she captures images of the scene on her cell phone. She proceeds to report the case to the police who discount her story since there appears to be no evidence (Adrian 37). The police ask her to go home. They promise to send an officer to her home later. While all this happens, Lucan observes from a distance. In a bid to ensure that Gabrielle does not reveal the photos on her phone to anyone else, Lucan disguises himself as a detective. He visits the home of Gabrielle with the intention of confiscating the images from her phone and erasing her memory. He reaches there only to be intensely attracted and have bloodlust for her. It’s through this attraction that Lucan realizes the birthmark on Gabrielle as that of a breed mate. The birthmark means that Lucan cannot breed or take Gabrielle’s blood since they would start a new generation of vampires. Recognizing this birthmark also entrusts Lucan to protect Gabrielle from rogue vampires. Gabrielle due to her breed mate status is also immune to compulsion by vampires and has an ability to sense where they reside.

The novel narrates on the origin of vampires. It explains the origin of vampires to their descendants who crash landed on earth centuries ago. The original vampires expanded their generation by mating with compatible human women who possessed similar characteristics to them. The original vampires were violent and blood thirsty.
