Having taken the assessment, it become immediately apparently obvious that what is wrong is that most of the statements that are scored “2” are slightly higher in the seriousness of the statements of distrust (i.e., my supervisor “is evil”, “is vindictive,” etc.). II. Reflection. a) What have you learned from completing this exercise? In having completed this exercise, I realized how truly skeptical I am of my supervisor’s actions and what this demonstrates about my personality. Perhaps I am not as trusting of a person as I originally thought. This may stem from a variety of issues. First of all, like most people, I am not completely trusting of strangers—nor people whom I know are hired in order to supervise me. Since my supervisor is paid, it can automatically be deduced from this that my supervisor is not necessarily acting in my best interest out of the goodness of one’s heart, but only because my supervisor is paid to do so. In essence, my supervisor is collecting a paycheck, so any idea that I might be able to trust my supervisor is skewed by the fact that my supervisor is being paid to be at a certain place at a certain time every day, and that complicates the situation with a conflict of interest. My supervisor might be worried about keeping the job to the point where my supervisor is willing to make anyone else look bad in order to stay on at our place of employment. b) How has your self-understanding increased? My self-understanding has increased significantly, especially with regard to learning how the motivations of people create tension and can cause problems in the workplace. Having completed this assessment has been, indeed, very informational as well as insightful for myself, both as a current employee and follower and as a potential future supervisor and leader. c) What does this assessment reveal about your potential strengths or weaknesses as a leader (or follower)? I think this assessment proves that I have relative strengths in whatever path I choose to follow—either as a leader or a follower. I know that whatever path I would choose, it would be the right one. I have natural leadership tendencies, but at the same time don’t necessarily receive pleasure in giving other people orders or being a demanding and mentally taxing individual who requires a lot from my underlings. It is difficult to be a leader because one must guide justly, with a firm sense of direction, and a gentle rein. However, this quality might make me a good leader for the following reason. “When a manager is able to persuade a team to complete some objectives without forcing his authority, then he is demonstrating leadership qualities.” 1 d) Based on this assessment, how can you improve your effectiveness as a leader (or follower)? Based on this assessment, I would definitely like to improve my effectiveness as a leader, since I think I am pretty good at following directions and being a follower. In order to improve my effectiveness as a leader, I have a few ideas in mind which could help me achieve success in this arena. First of all, I would take on increasingly more difficult tasks as time went on as an employee to start with at the beginning. Then, I would gradually ease into becoming a supervisor with more important roles that would have to be undertaken step by step. I wouldn’t be able to become a leader overnight.
