HOMELESSNESS IN ATLANTA GEORGIA

Homelessness is caused by poverty, unemployment, lack of housing, domestic violence, and substance abuse. Mental illness and immigrant status are also contributing factors. Children suffer most when parents are homeless because it exposes them to violence and sexual abuse.

            Homelessness has become methodologically challenging to count and track. According to estimates 75,000 Georgians were homeless last year. Statistically we have more homeless males than females. Governments try to provide shelter and food temporarily but homelessness needs a permanent fix. The homeless are often considered as being undeserving of support. They are frequently stigmatized as being mentally ill, out of control and personally responsible for their situation.

            This is important to me because nobody deserves to be sleeping on the street irrespective of what may have happened to get them there. A study (Lee, Jones and Lewis, 2014) found that in as much as homelessness is attributed to personal issues, the majority of which are outside of the person’s control such as mental illness and poverty.

            Two weeks ago, a homeless person set a bridge on fire and it collapsed, caused a lot of traffic, and much money to rebuild. The government needs to find a way to keep them off the street otherwise nobody knows what will happen next. The entire community needs to deal with this as opposed to just relying on the government. It should be a team effort.

            Due to the weak economy and high unemployment rates, homelessness is increasingly alarming. One out of seven people suffer hunger or are forced to sleep under bridges.

Homelessness in Columbia, SC has become an ongoing and growing issue.  There are many programs that have been developed to address this issue but there seems to not be a plausible resolution.  Quantitative reports are produced yearly, based on a government mandate, to track the amount of homeless people in the state of South Carolina.  According to the South Carolina Coalition for the Homeless, there are 420 individuals living in emergency shelters, 261 in transitional homes, 195 unsheltered and that number continues to grow.  (nhipdata).  

Many factors contribute to homelessness such as mental illness, mental facilities without the capacity to house patients, failing economy, declines in businesses and jobs, lack of educational means, financial hardships, mentally challenged veterans, and runaways.  Not only does homelessness affect adults but also children and families have been on the rise.  Many times, people overlook this issue because it has become a common place for many Americans.  Any state you visit has the same problem but there seems to be little to no options of rectifying this issue. This topic was easy to select because of the amount of articles that's available and the problems that keep on arising from this one issue. According to the textbook,"Postpositivisit hold a deterministic philosophy in which causes (probably) determine effects or outcomes. Thus, the problems studied by postpositivists reflect the need to identify and assess the causes that influence outcomes, such as found in experiments" (Creswell, 2013).
