Need help with my writing homework on The Main Features of Experimental Social Psychology. Write a 1250 word paper answering; Hollway (2007a) suggests that William McDougall, a British psychologist, who in 1908 published a book entitled ‘Introduction to Social Psychology’, this could be acknowledged as the beginning of modern social psychology in the UK. Before this time, psychology was acknowledged as a division of philosophy, where the ideas about people in the social context were shaped through the thoughts, beliefs, and theorizing of philosophers. Nevertheless, by the early nineteen hundred science was starting to rather overtake philosophy as the principal paradigm through which beliefs were formed in the academic world. At this time it was commonly assumed that these new methods of producing knowledge, through the pursuit of scientific methods and principles, would produce the type of certainties through which progress could move swiftly forward (Hollway, 2007a).'
The development of science has had a profound effect on Western societies and their understanding of the universe, and as a result, the confidence levels in which academics place on in its power to understand almost anything in the universe was phenomenal at this time. Therefore, at this time in history, it is not unexpected that some social psychologists wanted to incorporate these new and influential scientific techniques to understand and investigate how human beings interact in the social world. Early experimental social psychologists that used scientific techniques, conducted their experiments in laboratories and assumed that they could produce psychological principles that were as valid as physical principles that were being produced at this time (Hollway, 2007a). In science, which includes experimental social psychology, understanding the objectives entails the achievement of four goals. description, prediction, determining, causality and explanation (Cozby, 2004 cited in Schneider, Gruman Caitts, 2005).
What is now seen as the beginning of modern social psychology, started when social .psychologists first started using experiments as a method in which to observe and understand people in the social world.
