At this time it was commonly assumed that these new methods of producing knowledge, through the pursuit of scientific methods and principles, would produce the type of certainties through which progress could move swiftly forward (Hollway, 2007a).'

Early experimental social psychologists that used scientific techniques, conducted their experiments in laboratories and assumed that they could produce psychological principles that were as valid as physical principles that were being produced at this time (Hollway, 2007a). In science, which includes experimental social psychology, understanding the objectives entails the achievement of four goals. description, prediction, determining, causality and explanation (Cozby, 2004 cited in Schneider, Gruman Caitts, 2005).
