Question; What is an example of a company doing good by doing well—that is, making profits—and for that reason improving the general welfare? How can the example be converted into an argument against the theory of the corporation as having social responsibilities?

Answer

When large companies profit consistently, some of the money often trickles down to the field employees in one way or another. While some companies offer financial compensation in the form of bonuses or raises, others offer more subtle gains, such as improved benefits packages. In the case of Best Buy, the company recently unveiled expanded parental benefits. These include up to four weeks of 100% paid leave for new birth, adopting or foster parents, and up to ten emergency child-care visits per year from licensed providers. While these benefits are not useful to all employees, they will be huge for those struggling families whose parents both have to work full-time jobs to support their family. 

The argument against the theory of social responsibility in this case, as well as any where the profits trickle down, is that the best way for companies corporations to be socially responsible is to increase profits (Business Ethics, 2016, p. 611). The idea is that when a company profits, all those associated with it profit as well. Consumers get more offerings, people looking for jobs find opportunities, and employees get benefits and promotions. While all of these may not occur in most cases, at least one usually does. As always, there are exceptions and corporations that will gladly pocket the profits without a second thought. However, even then, the benefit of maintaining a gainful employment can be viewed as a worthwhile endeavor.
