chose the inauguration speech by John F. Kennedy in which to analyze. The purpose of this speech was to unite the nation. He opened his speech by saying “For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago” (Kennedy). As the second sentence of his speech, President Kennedy utilized pathos or an appeal to emotion. One must remember that during his campaign and even up until his inauguration there was great trepidation surrounding him because he was Catholic, and the United States had never had a Catholic president before. There were rumors swirling that President Kennedy would not be beholden to the American people but to the Pope, so by saying this and referencing God, it was an emotional attempt to bridge the divide between his personal religious belief and the perception of that belief by the American people. Later in his speech he stated “Finally, to those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction” (Kennedy). This was Kennedy using logos, or an appeal to logic. Kennedy had seen what war can bring as he served during WWII, this appeal to peace is an appeal to logic, that it is logically better to seek peace than it is to venture into war where destruction occurs to both physical places as well as to lives. I believe the inauguration address given by President Kennedy utilized the Rogerian argument style. He stated his thesis which was “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty” (Kennedy). He supported that by speaking about allies and foes alike.  He was not able to conclude his speech in a manner that would be considered neat and tidy, because his speech addressed hopes for the future, and the future is always unknown. Kennedy ended his speech by saying “With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own” (Kennedy). One could say that his addressing of foes could be viewed as a counterargument, but I disagree because the purpose of the inaugural speech is to inspire hope in not only the newly sworn-in President but in the future of the nation as a whole. Presenting a counterargument in this type of speech could be seen as unpatriotic.

Hello class, for this week’s forum I have chosen “Eisenhower’s Farewell Address to the Nation”. I believe the purpose for this speech is so that president Eisenhower may share with the people his last thoughts and the accomplishments the nation had during his time in office. Close to the end of his speech he states “We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world” (Eisenhower, 1961). This sentence says it all. After three long wars in ten years are nations moral and courage still stands apart from other nations. How we don’t fight to fight but, to help bring peace and good fortune to all and not just are nation.  I believe the claim for this article is “Like every other citizen, I wish the new President, and all who will labor with him, Godspeed. I pray that the coming years will be blessed with peace and prosperity for all” (Eisenhower, 1961). Though for me it is hard to tell what the claim could be because he’s addressing something instead of placing an argument. Eisenhower seems to be using the pathos to reach the people by bringing up the hard ship they endured together during his time in office. I would also have to say it is the Rogerian method do to the fact it’s not an argument but him addressing the situations that happened during his presidency.
