Objective: To consider the shape of a plot in a given story. To describe why the plot construction fulfills the expectations of the reader. To demonstrate how an author used characters, motivations, and events to arrive at an appropriate climax.

Task: Write an essay wherein you discuss how the climax of the story is both impossible to predict and inevitable when looking back. You may want to consider these questions when composing your essay:

• What are the major parts of the plot: exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling 
• action, resolution, and conclusion?How does the author distract the reader from the real outcome with competing possibilities?
• How does the author create an ending that makes sense when considered in the context of 
• the rest of the story? 
• How does the author gradually increase the tension as the story progresses?
