Smith's Furniture Factory (SFF)
SFF employs 175 workers (125 permanent and 50 casual), from a range of diverse backgrounds, who are engaged in the manufacturing of household furniture. The factory operates between 6 am and 4 pm, Monday to Friday and Saturday from 7am to 12 pm.
On the Saturday shift, there is minimal supervisory staff and casual workers with English as a second language.
The structure of the organisation is:
Office: Management and administration personnel.
Warehouse: Loading and unloading of furniture, storage of furniture and associated goods.
Factory production line: the main area where furniture is produced, this is divided into 5 areas; design, machine operation, assembly, lacquering and fabric finishing.
Over the last 3 months, whilst undertaking inspections, it has been identified on several occasions that a jigsaw guard has been removed. This hazard is normally identified at the start of shift on a Monday morning. The permanent workers on the Monday shift have also raised this issue and submitted hazard report forms.
Despite being advised of this, the supervisor has not resolved this issue. The safety representative wants to refer this issue to the Health and Safety Committee meeting. The committee members include: general manager, machine operations manager, purchasing officer, training officer, 7 health and safety representatives and the office administrator.
