Ode to Woolworth's
1. After the 20% off sale, after the 30% off sale, after the 50% off sale, after the open double quote“everything must goclose double quote” sale, Woolworth's, itself, is gone. Five and dime of my youth: boarded up. It was in a Woolworth's that I found pristine happiness in a fake Alexandrite ring when the fake glass gleamed on my tanned finger during sixth grade softball. In Woolworth's I pored eagerly through bins of 45 rpm records with inexplicable extra holes punched in the colored centers. Later my girlfriends and I would put our Blood Sweat and Tears or the Fifth Dimension singles on my Panasonic open double quote“Swingerclose double quote” and swivel our narrow hips at impromptu patio dance concerts. On another aisle of the store there were small multicolored votive candles that Michelle Montalvo and I tilted to make wax pools. We rolled the hot scented wax in our hands and fashioned idols or voodoo dolls meant to capture or repel the hearts of the 6th grade boys. It was in Woolworth's that I unearthed the strange flowered canvas platform shoes that started a fad, my only claim to popularity in junior high. And, it was in Woolworth's that I took surreptitious trips to the aisle of feminine hygiene products. There bulky packets of sanitary napkins were mysterious and alluring to my 12-year-old imagination.
2. As an adult with a child of my own, the neighborhood Woolworth's was just as tempting, not so much for its small bottles of Evening in Paris cologne or aisles of frosted pastel nail polish, but its array of purposeful and comforting minutiae. It carried the little necessities of life: fuzzy pink Peds, citrus reamers, lint cleaners, disposable rain bonnets, felt, parakeet feed, diaper wipes, seam rippers. Where will such a large buffet of small treats be set before me again?
