One of the greatest thrills of my life was to sing with my community choir at Carnegie Hall. Of course, we paid for the privilege, but besides singing in this famous American concert hall, we also sang under the direction of John Rutter, the English choral conductor and composer. We joined several other choirs to create a choir of 250 voices singing two of Rutter's long works, Te Deum and Gloria. Rutter is a delightful, caring person, who conducts with both passion and kindness. I remember the experience fondly, and our choir continues to include Rutter Christmas carols in many of our programs. I have sung his Angel's Carol, Candlelight Carol,Shepherd's Pipe Carol, Love Came Down at Christmas, and What Sweeter Music. Rutter has also arranged other traditional carols, such as Silent Night. This year, we are singing Rejoice and Be Merry, a song Rutter wrote for the Washington Cathedral Choral Society instead of his own Cambridge Singers.
