Assignment 

This week you will be writing a memo as the coding supervisor to your coding staff in regard to two of the Root Operation guidelines found under the Medical and Surgical guidelines in the front of your code book. These guidelines start with B3.1a and go through B3.16.

Complete the following.

• Select two guidelines that you find interesting and provide an explanation of each in a memo to new coders.
• Use the examples given in the guidelines and use your Appendixes in the back of your code book.
• Make sure you include all definitions, instructions, and guidelines.
• Put the guidelines into your own words.
• Provide an example of a code that demonstrates the guidelines you selected.
• Include in your memo what encoder is, and a summary of the benefits of using encoder for accurate coding that follows coding guidelines.
• Remember to use proper tone in your paper. You are speaking from a "coding supervisor" point of view. Your audience is new coders.
• Make sure to use proper format for your memo, and include all of the required communication elements for an internal memorandum

Assignment  2

Choose one

• Repair of a simple, intermediate, and complex laceration. Found in the Integumentary System in the Surgery section.
• The definitions for a fracture repair (there are three) and how they apply to orthopedic procedures. Found in the Musculoskeletal system in the Surgery section.

Complete the following.

• Create a presentation with the guidelines and coding tips for your chosen topic using PowerPoint.
• Make sure you include all definitions, instructions, and guidelines.
• Put the guidelines into your own words and make sure to include at least one of the following: flow charts, pictures, or diagrams.
• Provide an example of what a code from each guideline would look like and give the code description.

Assignment 3

This week you will select one of the following guideline topics from ICD 10-CM code book and create a PowerPoint presentation that will explain coding diagnosis from the chapter specific guidelines. Choose from one of the following diagnosis.

• Diabetes Mellitus
• Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)
• Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF)

Find the guidelines for the one diagnosis that you choose. Read it carefully and look it up in the tabular list until you understand what the guidelines are conveying.

Complete the following.

• Create a PowerPoint slide for each guideline under the diagnosis. Include a slide/slides where you quote the guideline verbatim. Make sure to include quotes and an APA in-text citation.
• Next, include a slide that communicates the same guideline in a way that is easy to understand by a new coder. This will require you to reword and breakdown the information contained in the original guideline. Make sure to put the guidelines into your own words.
• Make sure to use flow charts, pictures, or diagrams in your presentation.
• Find two codes in the tabular list from the chapter your guidelines are from and use them as an example in your PowerPoint.
• Create slides explaining why following coding guidelines is important to maintaining standards of ethical coding. Include how ethical behavior pertains to medical coding, why it's important, and how unethical behavior can impact patients and the institution. Include Notes for each slide that have at least 50-word count summary on ethics and their importance in coding.
• Include a reference slide with an APA formatted citation for the source where you quoted the chosen guideline.
