Overview

Complete a character sketch of a major character from either:

  • Sinclair Ross's "The Painted Door"
  • Susan Glaspell's "A Jury of her Peers"

Directions

Identify two traits from your chosen major character.

Use the character sketch chart provided below to outline your composition.

Compose a paragraph for each trait. In these paragraphs, include a topic sentence, supporting details, and a closing sentence.

Guidelines

Use the following guidelines as you write and revise your composition:

  • The supporting details should be specific, relevant, valid, and sufficient.
  • For each supporting detail, be sure to introduce the example, noting the speaker and the part in the story. After each supporting detail, explain how the detail shows the quality. Use the character trait word and words from the quote to help with your explanation.
  • Do not retell the story. Focus your writing on discussing the two character traits you have introduced in your topic sentence and on providing evidence from the text as proof.
  • Be sure to include the title of the text and the text creator early in your prose. You could even do so in your topic sentence.
  • Make sure each character trait has at least TWO specific quotes or paraphrased examples from the text as support or proof for each trait.
