PAPER 1: Joining the Argument
Assignment:
- Write a 3-4 page paper on your semester article/topic that includes the following:
- Introduce the source--the I in ICE (Introduce, Cite, Explain/Elaborate)--by providing the author’s name and credentials and the title of the article.
- Briefly summarize the article (a summary must not include your opinion).
- State your thesis (must be debatable).
- In the remainder of the paper (the body paragraphs), expand upon the author’s argument. In other words, you’re joining the author in his or her argument (some or all of it)--not arguing against the author.
- Incorporate two additional sources to support your thesis. Note: Your sources must meet the “Acceptable Sources for Papers” requirement found on page 4 in your syllabus. Not meeting this requirement will result in a substantial grade deduction.
- Cite and explain/elaborate upon (the C and E in ICE) any borrowed information before moving on.
- This argument will not be complete in that you will not yet address opposing views. Focus only on your side for now.
- Quote, summarize, and/or paraphrase accurately using properly formatted in-text citations, and include a Works Cited page. Use the MLA 8th Edition (https://tinyurl.com/BurnsMLA8) handout and the MLA Handbook. Failure to properly document sources using MLA 8 Documentation Style may result in an F.
- Format your paper according to MLA Style (https://tinyurl.com/BurnsFormatPapers) and use 12-point Times New Roman. Failure to do so will result in a lower grade.
Caution: Failing to meet even one requirement listed above will result in a lower grade.
