Part 1: The TED foundation has worked diligently to decrease the stigma of mental illness by showcasing speakers who have 1) experienced mental health issues, 2) dedicated their lives helping those with mental illness, or 3) spent years in clinical research to broaden our collective understanding of mental well-being. There are many talks on their website that emphasize mood disorders (i.e., major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder) and trauma and stress-related disorders (like PTSD).

Go to TED.com and enter in keywords related to this unit’s material in the search bar. Consider terms like “depression” or “bipolar disorder” “trauma” “stress” or “PTSD”.  Watch one or more of them as your interest dictates. Select one that you will dive further into for your Main Entry discussion response.

Introduce the TED Talk you selected with the following:

The speaker’s name and background

A brief summary of their talk

Identify the mental health issue it covers

Then, identify at least one of the speaker’s main take-home messages, referencing that point with a time stamp from the video (so that we can go watch, too!). Discuss your reaction to that take-home message.

Part 2: Considering the category of disorder that you did not choose for Part 1 (i.e., if your TED talk focused on trauma-related disorders, then you’ll choose mood disorders…and vice versa):

Identify one thing you learned in this unit’s reading (the text or the DSM-5 study guide) that you found interesting or that challenged something you believed and discuss your thinking on it (be specific and resonant).

Ask a question you still have about that category of disorder.

Part 3: Let’s dive into some of the cutting-edge research currently being conducted by dissociative disorder researchers. Using the UMGC Library database or Google.com/Scholar, do a search for one of the three dissociative disorders (dissociative identity disorder [DID], depersonalization/derealization disorder, or dissociative amnesia) and limit the search results to the current year. Find an article that stands out to you, surmise its gist, and summarize the take-home findings for us in 100 words.

Remember to include an APA formatted citation and reference and link to the article for those of us curious to learn more. End with how you think this information will be helpful to those recovering from these conditions.
