Focus:  The Cultural Self-Identity Speech is about you. To address your life, build the speech around a focus.   For your focus, address 2 cultural groups (excluding religion) with which you identify.  See the textbook and class materials for a list of and explanation of different cultural identity groups.   Address how these 2 cultural groups intersect, compliment, and conflict with each other as they shape your life.  Remember that ultimately you are telling us something about you – who you are based on these influences. Address significant aspects of your cultural background and how they have made a difference in your life and/or shaped your behaviors, attitudes.

While this speech is based on personal experiences, it needs to show an understanding of the cultural groups you are addressing. Involve light research, including knowledge of the textbook material regarding the cultural groups, interviews with relatives and others within the cultural group, and any other outside research that will help you understand the cultural group.

Speech Delivery:  Our delivery needs to be extemporaneous – prepared and practiced so that you sound natural when speaking. Do not read the speech and do not do an “impromptu” speech.  You should have the speech well prepared and practiced days before you actually deliver the speech.

Only use a key word outline or proper note or index cards to deliver the speech with.   No fully written out essay, and no long involved notes. Key Word Outline is due with the speech, when the speech is due.  Your grade is lowered one letter grade if you do not have the key-word outline.  See handouts and examples in book for models of how to put one together.  No late outlines accepted.

Speech Strucutre/Design:  Structure your speech with effective introduction, body, and conclusion.

Introduction should grab audience’s attention (lead up to the topic), make your topic clear with a strong thesis statement, and preview your main points.

Body of speech should be made up of 2 or 3 distinct main points. Support your main points and add detail by adding “supporting materials” (narratives and brief examples from your life).

Conclusion should signal you are coming to the end of the speech, with effective, strong concluding remarks.

Speech is 4-6 minutes long, with a 30 second grace period after 6 minutes. Grade is lowered one full grade if you fall outside the time range.

Speech Turn In:  Speeches will be recorded, uploaded to YouTube OR Studio, and link to that video posted into both an Assignment folder AND a Discussion Forum (so that all students can see the speeches).  Failure to post the speech link in both places will result in a lower grade.

Please follow posted instructions for setting up your speech video and submitting the video link.
