Personal Assignment #1 Personal and Team Entrepreneurship

Post this assignment to cuLearn before class on Week 3

1.1 Entrepreneurial self assessment

Follow the link below to the 'BDC entrepreneurial self assessment' and note your result. Note: Occasionally this BDC link seems to have problems; if that happens to you please don't get alarmed. Just be patient and try again a short time later. It sometimes helps to use a different computer (e.g. other than a mobile phone), or try using Google to find and click the link. Resist the urge to panic/email the instructor, it will not be of any more help than this.

1.2 Entrepreneurial motivation: Where are your strengths and passions?

Watch this short video by Tom Kelley, of the leading design firm IDEO:

Under the heading of each of the 3 circles he draws, jot down a few points that apply to you personally.

1.3 The Ultimate Guide to Creating the Perfect Founding Team

Read over this post from Jon Chan:

1.4 Posting:

a) Commentary from the first exercise (1.1). Copy your results from the BDC quiz into your assignment posting. What did you learn from this that might apply to your current, or future startup? How would you take advantage of your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses?

b) Post results/notes from 1.2. What did you learn from these exercises that might be applicable to your current, or next startup? Try not to generalize and be as specific as possible.

c) Conceptualize your ideal startup. Considering the points from the three circles you jotted down in 1.2, ask yourself the question: If knew I couldn't fail--what would my next, ideal startup look like? Discuss your answer in 3-4 sentences being as specific as possible (e.g. type of business, industry, product offering, etc.). If you are already working on your own business, include a comment on how closely it aligns with the answer to this question.

d) From the Chan post (1.3), summarize in 3-4 sentences which of Chan's suggestionsare most important and how you intend to put them to work in your future team. Explain which of the three founding roles he describes fits you best, and why.

e) Some believe that entrepreneurs are 'born' rather than 'made'. Do you believe entrepreneurship can be taught? Why or why not?
