Your purpose for speaking is to change or alter people’s beliefs, behaviors, values, or attitudes toward persons, processes, or phenomena.  A directed purpose of persuasive speaking is to motivate your audience to action.  At the end of your presentation, what do you want your audience to do?  Since your purpose is to convince or move your audience to action, you must select a topic that you feel strongly about in order to convey sincerity and a sense of urgency.  If you are passive or apathetic toward your subject, you cannot convince others to care.

Research: Three to five qualified, secondary sources are required.

Both primary sources (personal knowledge) and secondary sources (research) are required.  Speaker credibility (ethos) is essential, and one way to create the perception of speaker credibility is to make your knowledge of the subject and your experience with it explicit.
