Mid-level healthcare practitioners have emerged as a response to a shortage of primary care physicians, especially in many rural areas and in inner cities. They also appear to remedy the problem of very high healthcare costs. The question remains, however: has the role of the healthcare practitioner increased in importance beyond filling in and cost benefit?

Background

Kayla is about to graduate from UMA. She is eager to begin her career as a physician assistant (PA) and has already secured a position at the local hospital. Although she is excited to be a part of a medical home providing comprehensive medical care to patients, she is concerned about whether or not her contributions will be valued by others on the team, like physicians and nurses.
