I have to say, I really like Chapter 7!  I'm always trying to push for more critical thinking in the classroom!  As an instructor, I was highly trained to create lessons using Bloom's taxonomy.  Bloom's takes us through stages of learning - the lowest being remembering and the highest being evaluating (sounds a lot like sponging and panning for gold, doesn't it?)

Here is a great video that explains Bloom's well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfp3x_qx5IM

However, as time went on, another taxonomy of thinking came along - that of Marzano. Essentially, Marzano discusses that 3 systems are in play during learning:

  1. The self-system - this system is egocentric - Is this important to me?  Why? Shall I engage in this?
  2. The Metacognitive System - this is where the learner sets goals for him or herself and self-monitors those goals.
  3. The Cognitive System - this system uses all of the learner's thinking strategies to comprehend the new information or activity.

Class, when we combine all of this information with the information from the chapter, we begin to realize how very complex our learning is!  The more we know about how we learn, and the more aware we are of our learning processes, the better learner we become!

This allows us to move from being only a "sponger" to someone who is able to "pan for gold".

Bloom's Taxonomy consists of five levels of learning: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation (Kastburg, 2003). The growing desire is that all of your classes engage you at the higher levels of Synthesis and Evaluation (Halawi, Pires, & McCarthy, 2009). Assignments are intended to provide this opportunity for you to reach all five levels as you progress through your degree program. What are your thoughts on Marzano's systems?  What about Bloom's Taxonomy?  How can you use these to better your critical thinking and learning?

(FIVE SENTENCES OR MORE with examples, THANKS!)

How can you work to reach the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy during the completion of your degree program? How would your working to reach these higher levels help you to enhance your learning in each class?

(FIVE SENTENCES with EXAMPLES, thanks!)
