Please read the assigned article A World Enslaved by E. Benjamin Skinner and incorporate answers to the questions below into your paper.

  1. Provide a brief summary of the article.
  2. Point out the main philosophy of the author regarding the subject matter.
  3. How does the author support or develop his point of view and what evidence is used?
  4. Skinner proclaims that “today there are more slaves than at any time in human history.” Does this surprise you? Why, or why not? Explain your answer.
  5. Skinner further believes that the “United Nations, whose founding principles call for it to fight bondage in all its forms, has done almost nothing to combat modern slavery” and that “there is little to suggest the United Nations, which consistently fails to hold its own member states accountable for widespread slavery, will be an effective tool in defeating the broader phenomenon.” Do you agree, or disagree? Why, or why not?
  6. Please explain what you think Skinner means when he states “until governments define slavery in appropriately concise terms, prosecute the crime aggressively in all its forms, and encourage groups that empower slaves to free themselves, millions more will remain in bondage.”
  7. Please explain in detail what steps you believe the United States should take to deal with the problem of worldwide slavery. If you believe the U.S. should take no action, and then explain your reasons for not doing so in detail.
  8. What did you find most meaningful in the article?
  9. Are you in agreement with the main premise or conclusions of the author? Why or why not? Cogently explain your reasons.
  10. What are your conclusions about the usefulness of the article?
  11. What sociological ideas, concepts, theories, models or research presented in class do you think can be linked (positively or negatively) to the content of the article?

  2. Double-space the body of your paper using a font no larger than 12 points and no smaller than 10 points.
  3. Indent paragraphs and double-space between paragraphs.
