Emotional quotient (EQ), is defined as an individual's ability to identify, evaluate, control, and express emotions while Intelligence Quotient(IQ) is defined as a score derived from one of several standardized tests designed to assess intelligence. I agree with the quote on page 359. I think to be a great leader Emotional quotient is vital because this enables you to be at the top of every aspect of a company that will lead it to be successful.Due to the fact that someone with high Emotional quotient has a greater ability to understand, empathize and connect with the people around them it is only fair to say such a person could be a great leader and team players hence warrants promotion. On the other hand because Intelligence Quotient(IQ) is a score derived from one of several standardized tests designed to assess an individual's intelligence, it is not a better indicator of success in the workplace hence can not be used to identify leaders, good team players, and people who best work by themselves.
By definition, Power is the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. In an organization, power is measured by the ability to get things done via knowledge, influence and /or authority. There are several ways power can be used. For example Coercive power, is based on the managers ability to force an employee to comply with order, Legitimate power, such a power rests in the believe among employees that their manager has the rights to give them order based on his or her position, Reward power rest on the ability that a manager has to give some sort of rewards to employees, reference power which rest on the ability that a manager has to be respected and expert power which rest on the belief of employees that their managers have a particularly high level of knowledge or highly specialized skill set. Apart from Coercive power, I think all the other power bases need to be combined in other to achieve long term success. The ways in which managers influence their employees and encourage them to be productive in the long term depends on many variables, including the personality of the leader, the skills of the group/employees, the task or assignment at hand, or the group dynamics and personalities of group members. Hence each base of power has its place in management and can prove effective in the right setting and right circumstances.
