A schema is an organization of memory elements (prepositions, images, and attitudes) representing a large set of meaningful information pertaining to a general concept” (Gagne, Wager,m Golas & Keller, 2005). The first example of schema as it relates to the world is our view on Pastors. We may believe that pastors are quiet and humble people, this is exactly our schema on our expectations of pastors. The second example of schema as it relates to education is hen a teacher is preparing to go into a new lesson, she must first test the students on the old information that was taught to them before entering the new lesson.
The difference between building a new schema and using existing schemas to help conceptual and skill growth is when you have gained knowledge about something and able to keep it stored in memory. This existing stored memory can be something that can also be combined with the new learned knowledge to help with the skill growth. However, “a schema can be defined as a set of linked mental representations of the world, which we use both to understand and to respond to situations. The assumption is that we store these mental representations and apply them when needed” (McCleod, 2018).
Ability is defined as human performances being affected by influential structures, and just being able to do something. Traits are defining as when performing human individuals reflect personality, this is what make each individual different. Every individual is not going to produce the same ability and traits. There are individuals who process slower and those that process information very fast. The way we all learn and communicate are going to be different on many levels. The ability to do something is generally how we produce a skill. For instance, being able to organize and prioritize as we look at abilities will he with instructional developmental skills.
For abilities and traits, I would like to use me as an example. With me being a Community Partnership School Director at an elementary school I am mandated to participate in public speaking. This is something that I do not like to do. However, because of my personality through genetics and with outgoingness, assertiveness and the drive to speak a part of my family lineage, over time this will be something that remains constant over my lifetime. This is going to help me pick up this ability and trait as well as enhance my public speaking skills.
