Have you ever hoped for something? Well, I did; my name is Angel, I'm an African American girl with a teenage mother. I was raised by three powerful women and my father. I would like to tell you more about my life's story, well here goes.

I was the joy of my great grandmother's heart and the malice in the heart of my grandmother Ann. My mother Shan, was a teenager when she became pregnant with me. She was in the 12th grade to be exact and walked down the aisle with a baby bump on her graduation day. Shan stated to many family members "my baby will not have to walk down the aisle again, she has already graduated." Shan, wasn't ready for the responsibility of raising me as a single woman. But no worries Shan was blessed with two strong women and the father of her unborn child, whom all graciously gave their time and themselves. Mary always said, "I was as beautiful as the angels singing around my crab, the day they brought me home from the hospital."

It's been a year now in which Shan advised I began walking, feeding myself, and getting into everything.

I was born with Genv Varum which caused complications during walking. Genv Varum means when you have an outward bowing of the legs so that the knees are further apart than the ankles when standing. (Google was my point of reference for this definition) My family was advised corrective surgery would be needed. The surgery was scheduled for the following month. My family and church members all came together to pray for me before I went in for surgery. My mother Shan was very emotional, to say the least as was everyone else. It's been three hours now and everyone was still there anxiously waiting to anticipate great news from the team of doctors. Here they came, the surgery went great she was doing good! Everyone began crying tears of joy and shouted hallelujah, hallelujah thank you, Jesus, to the top of their lungs! The next day everyone returns to the hospital checking on me. Again, they were advised I was doing great. The doctors advised it was going to be awhile before I could walk again but to no avail, I still wore that beautiful smile and the innocence of a child.

It was almost a year then, Shan started medical school and I was walking without any complications. It took a lot of therapy hours prayer and patience, but I was getting around like a champ. Ann, Mary, and Sam Angel's father were all still active in her life and were all doing well. Shan has graduated from medical school and lead a successful life.

It was then sixteen years later, Mary became very ill and passed away. My world was turned upside down due to the passing of the only person I felt truly loved me. If you remember in the begin of my story Mary gave me my name when she saw Angels around my crab. Mary was the best great-grandmother a little girl could wish for. She never turned me away when I wanted to play or read a book. She would allow me to go outside but I had to take a bath each time I came inside, and I mean literally no exaggeration. On a weekend day, I would go through approximately five or six outfits with accessories and new hairdo's. Mary's house rules were straightforward; be obedient and clean up after yourself. Even with me knowing Mary would go behind me later and re-clean all the areas I had already cleaned. I would still clean with a smile and I enjoyed every minute of it. As I became older I so desperately wanted to exceed Mary's expectations. Mary whole heartily wanted me to become the first attorney in our family. Whenever guess was over she would call me into the guest room for me to tell them I wanted to become an attorney. Mary and I watched People's Court together every day after school. And every day she would look at me and say "Angel, you're going to be our first family attorney when you grow up"? and I would comply with a yes and a smile on my face.

With Mary passing, I was forced to spend time with Ann. Ann was always around and there if I needed anything, however, she was never there for an extended period. Ann was in and out, at most I would spend maybe four hours with Ann. But after the passing of my grandfather, Ann began drinking very heavy. Ann would drink, and she chose each time to make me the punching bag for all her hurts, anger and misplaced emotions. As quickly as I could get away from her I would run to Mary until one day I realized I had nowhere to run any longer. Mary is now an angel watching over me.

Years later Ann became sick and no longer had the strength to beat me any longer. During this time, I took care of her. Ann got better and apologized for all her wrongdoing and became the best friend I could ever ask for before her passing.

I learned that as I hoped to exceed Mary's expectations, it was Mary's dream for me to become an attorney. I was only hoping I could make her happy when I realized in life you must find yourself and do what makes you happy and complete.
