MNCs and globalization go hand-in-hand.  After reading this week's lesson, find an MNC and describe ways it has been a good citizen or a bad citizen.  Don't use Nestle since it is described in the lesson.

Multinational corporations are typically companies that have headquarters that are based in a multitude of countries. These entities have a tremendous impact on not only their host nations, but globally as well. With their ability to provide jobs while supplying a demand across the globe, they can grow economies while having a hand in multinational partnerships for their respective causes.

The multinational corporation I will be discussing is Quintiles. This company has a number of headquarters located in the following nations to name a few: Canada, Italy, United States of America, Germany, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom ("Welcome to IQVIA - A New Path to Your Success Via Human Data Science", 2018). The focus of this organization is to provide healthcare and other related services. Along with its noble mission, the revenue point is quite staggering at $3 billion ("Welcome to IQVIA - A New Path to Your Success Via Human Data Science", 2018). Furthermore, it is viewed as a great place to work as documented in a series of surveys conducted by its employees.

Overall, I believe that this company has been a good citizen. This is solely looking at the company from a superficial level. I will not delve into global issues with big pharma. I will primarily analyze what the companies purpose is versus how well they execute it.

Quintiles mainly focuses on health information technologies and clinical research. When thinking about numerous FDA approved drugs, clinical trials had to be accomplished for these drugs to be put on the market. This corporation focuses on steps 1 through 4 of this process. As being one of the largest research organizations, it has globally employed over 50,000 people ("Welcome to IQVIA - A New Path to Your Success Via Human Data Science", 2018). Moreover, Quintiles has dedicated itself to furthering the public health initiative through various research conducted with the support of non-profit organizations and government agencies. Two specific causes this company is working hard to fight against are the opioid crisis and gaps in oncology ("Welcome to IQVIA - A New Path to Your Success Via Human Data Science", 2018). Quintiles has been able to lobby for legislation that will further diminish the opioid crisis. Furthermore, this entity has partnered with other life sciences organizations to maximize cancer treatment while simultaneously conducting research to further enrich and develop new methods of treatment. Recently, Quintiles and IMS Health created a merger that will only enhance the productivity of the company ("Welcome to IQVIA - A New Path to Your Success Via Human Data Science", 2018).

On paper, this organization has proven to be a good global citizen.

              For this week's forum discussion, the multinational corporation that I decided to highlight is FedEx / Federal Express. This multinational, intercontinental corporations serves citizens across the globe when it comes to logistics management and needs as well as growing economies in many impoverish countries by creating jobs where they have a hub. FedEx is highly invested in the communities and countries it serves by aiming to give back $200 million in over 200 global communities by the year of 2020 progressively creating great opportunities and deliver positive change all around the world. This company also set up a high standard for behavioral conduct in areas that include workplace health, safety and environment, human rights, harassment and discrimination, conflicts of interest and gifts and entertainment. FedEx recognizes that the long-term health of their business is directly connected to the health of the planet and local communities.Their environmental policy focuses on finding solutions that reduce their own footprint and inspire action in others. They have an enterprise-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) which is based on the key elements of ISO 14001. Each FedEx operating company identifies and works to minimize relevant environmental impacts, and appoints a senior sustainability leader accountable for performance. 

                   Personally, I believe that FedEx is a good citizen because of what it brings to the community where it operates and how globally it puts a rural community as far economic growth is concerned.

This weeks lesson is over multinational corporations.  Multinational corporations are companies that have operations in one or more countries other than their domestic country.  The company that I am choosing to discuss this week is Nike.

Nike is a multinational corporation that is based in Beaverton, Oregon and they also have headquarters in Europe (Netherlands) and China (Shanghai).  Nike also extends it reach by owning brands Converse and Hurley.  Nike is known for their athletic wear that includes shoes (especially its Air Jordan line), clothing, backpacks, hats, watches, and other equipment.

Nike could be looked at as both a good and a bad citizen.  Let me explain.  As globalization took off, Nike expanded their reach outside of the United States and began to open factories in other countries where labor was cheaper and they could make the business more profitable.  The trouble with that Nike was found to operate sweatshops.  Phil Knight gave a speech in 1998 that in his eyes explained Nike’s practices.  In that speech he highlights that

“we have about 530,000 workers working on Nike shoes and clothes on a given day. There are going to be incidents. There have been some in the past, and there certainly will be more in the future. There are too many workers, too many interactions daily; and in Vietnam, too much tension based on nationality to avoid

any incidents….. The thing that we have learned more than anything else in this process is that when Nike has gone into a country with its manufacturing operations, wages have increased and poverty has decreased” (Wilsey and Lichtig,, n.d).

What he was saying is that we are really doing everyone a favor.  Without us the people in these countries would have no jobs and in the United States you have the privilege of cheaper shoes.  This thinking made Nike a bad citizen, as they seemed to care more for profits than Americans losing their jobs or the long hours and low pay of those in other countries.

Here in my opinion is where it gets complicated and they can be seen as both a good and bad citizen.  After the above controversy, Nike did what they could to make conditions better. 

“Nike has become even more transparent than its competitors about its labor practices, publishing a 108-page report revealing conditions and pay in its factories and acknowledging widespread issues, as well as a complete list of factories it contracted with. To this day, Nike continues to publish public reports of conditions in its factories” (Lutz, 2015).

Nike tried to be more transparent and fix people’s perception of the company.  However, last year there was a report stating that Nike was slipping into their old ways.  Investigators found that in Cambodia, things were not up to par with working conditions.

“Defying Nike’s policy that bars the entry of investigators into their factories, watchdog group Worker Rights Consortium managed to get access to a plant in Hansae, Vietnam. It was able to document a string of alleged abuses there including wage theft, forced overtime, restrictions on the workers’ use of toilets, exposure to toxic solvents, and padlocked exit doors” (Segran, 2017).

My thought on the situation is that Nike is a bad citizen even though it has made an attempt to get better over the last 20 years.  Nike seems to continue to put profits over people.
