Position Paper Assignment #4

Human Service Workers are often faced with the task of ethical decision-making. When making these decisions, they must be able to adequately support the decision that has been made. As we discussed in class this may require them to refer to their code of ethics, their agency’s policies and procedure manual, and the law. For this assignment, you will be given a case study, and you will need to respond to the questions that follow the case. When responding to the questions, you will need to refer to the text, the code of ethics, and at least one scholarly journal article beyond our course materials to help you make your decision and demonstrate support for your position. Your paper should be a minimum of 3 pages with a maximum of 5 pages, not including the title page and the reference page. You are also required to follow APA format for this assignment, double space, and utilize Times New Roman 12 point font.  Paper must include an introduction and conclusion.

Case Study:

John tells his counselor that he just found out he is terminally ill, has 6 months to live, and is seriously considering ending his life.  His counselor, Ava, tells John that she is concerned he may not have all of the information he needs to make a decision.  Ava asks him if he has a plan.  She is worried about his emotional state and his ability to make a decision.

Questions:

1.      What are the ethical issues involved in this case? Refer to the text and the NASW Code of Ethics for guidance.

2.      If John were your client, would you respect his self-determination, or would you influence him to search for alternatives to suicide at this stage of life?  Why or why not?  Show how you would use the ethical principles screen and course materials to support your position.

3.      As mentioned in class, it is possible that another provider could choose a counter position.  Using the ethical principles screen and course materials, how could another provider come to a different conclusion?

4.      What religious, ethical, and moral beliefs do you hold that might influence your work with John?
