Prepare a 15 slide presentation that combines advanced financial analysis techniques with AI-assistance to support a defensible investment recommendation.
Collapse AllIntroduction
This assessment requires you to apply advanced financial analysis techniques to evaluate two companies and determine which presents the stronger strategic investment opportunity. You will analyze financial statements using trend, ratio, and disclosure-based methods; compare performance indicators; assess earnings quality; and identify key risks that could influence your recommendation. Your final deliverable should present a clear, evidence-based investment decision in an executive-ready format that integrates accounting insights to support strategic judgment.
Overview
This portfolio work project builds your ability to read financial statements like a leader, then translate the numbers into an executive-level story by creating a slide presentation. You will analyze income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and selected disclosures to identify trends, risks, and opportunities. You will also use Al as a review partner, comparing Al generated insights against your independent analysis, verifying reasoning and assumptions, and refining how you communicate accounting-based recommendations.
Scenario
The Technology Reporting and Assurance Consortium is preparing a high-impact public brief on the financial resilience and reporting quality of the world's most influential technology companies. The brief will be used by investors, suppliers, regulators, and institutional partners to inform long-term commitments.
The Consortium needs a disciplined, evidence-based comparison grounded in audited financial statements and disclosures. Your team has been assigned to produce a two-company comparative analysis that answers one central question:
- Which company appears more financially resilient and strategically investable over the next three to five years, and why?
Using U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings and Yahoo! Finance, you will build an executive-level narrative that highlights the most important trends, risks, and opportunities and explains what the numbers and disclosures imply for future profitability, cash generation, and shareholder value.
After completing your analysis, you will use Copilot or the AI of your choice as an audit partner. AI will generate a competing interpretation, and you will test its claims against the filings. You will then correct what does not hold up and use what is useful to strengthen the credibility of your analysis.
Your Role
You are a member of the Consortium’s technical accounting team, responsible for producing a board-ready comparative brief. Your deliverable must be disciplined and decision focused.
You are responsible for four outcomes:
- Tell the financial story of each company using evidence from the income statement, balance sheet, cash flows, and disclosures.
- Translate accounting information into executive insight by explaining what drives performance, what appears sustainable, and what appears risky.
- Make a defensible recommendation on which company is more financially resilient and strategically investable.
- Use AI as a review and verification tool, improving your work without replacing your independent judgment.
Instructions
As you work through this assessment, follow the sequence and expectations outlined in the provided MBA-FPX5010 Assessment 1: Slide Detail Guide [PDF].
Step 1: Select Companies and Gather Required Sources
- Select two companies from the following list:
- Meta.
- Apple.
- Nvidia.
- Google.
- Tesla.
- Amazon.
- Use the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission website to retrieve each company’s most recent Form 10-K and Form 10-Q.
- Use Yahoo! Finance to gather market context and baseline comparables, including price history, key statistics, valuation ratios, and summary financial information.
Step 2: Complete Your Independent Analysis Before Using AI
Before using AI, complete your own analysis and draft your conclusions. Address each topic below:
- Income statement story:
- Explain each of the following:
- Revenue and margin direction.
- Major expense patterns.
- Key comparability items.
- End with a one sentence profitability thesis for each company supported by evidence.
- Explain each of the following:
- Balance sheet story:
- Summarize each of the following:
- Liquidity.
- Capital structure.
- Two disclosure supported strengths or risks.
- One key commitment or obligation.
- End with a one sentence resilience thesis for each company supported by evidence.
- Summarize each of the following:
- Cash flow story:
- Summarize each of the following:
- Operating cash flow quality.
- Investing priorities.
- Financing choices.
- End with a one sentence capital allocation thesis for each company supported by evidence.
- Summarize each of the following:
- Disclosure intelligence:
- Select at least three disclosures per company that materially affect interpretation and explain what each reveals and why it matters to decision makers.
- Ratio snapshot:
- Provide a comparison table with at least two profitability metrics, one liquidity metric, one leverage or capital structure metric, and one efficiency metric, using consistent definitions for both companies and a short justification of relevance.
- Head-to-head narrative:
- Identify each company’s strongest opportunity and largest risk, call out the most important accounting or disclosure theme for each, and explain what the combined evidence suggests about durable profitability and long-term value.
- Recommendation:
- Select one company, provide three evidence-based reasons, two risks to monitor over the next 12 to 24 months, and the specific signals that would cause you to reconsider.
Step 3: Use AI as an Audit Partner
After your independent draft is complete, use AI to generate a competing interpretation. At a minimum, use AI to produce the following:
- An executive summary for each company.
- A list of key risks and opportunities for each company.
- A recommendation between the two companies.
Step 4: Verify AI claims and Refine Your Work
Include an AI verification log in your appendix. This log should list:
- The exact prompts used.
- A brief summary of the AI’s outputs.
- At least six claims tested across the two companies. For each claim, identify:
- What the AI stated.
- Where it was verified (or not) in the SEC filing.
- Your conclusion (confirmed, partially supported, or not supported).
- A corrected version in your own words.
Conclude with a short reflection on how the AI supported your work while still relying on your independent judgment.
Step 5: Yellowdig Discussion Post, Peer Response, and Summary
After you complete your independent analysis and before you submit your final deck, create one discussion post in Yellowdig that meets your Yellowdig point/word requirements and includes:
- One insight about Company A tied to a specific metric, trend, or disclosure.
- One insight about Company B tied to a specific metric, trend, or disclosure.
- One head-to-head comparison insight that supports your decision framework.
- One question for classmates that invites evidence-based discussion.
- On the final line of your post, include an AI transparency statement ("AI assistance used", or “AI assistance not used”).
Next, write a reply to one classmate's post in Yellowdig. Your reply should meet Yellowdig’s required comment length and directly respond to what your classmate shared by adding either:
- One additional insight, or;
- One follow‑up question grounded in the filings or your analysis.
On Slide 14 of your presentation, provide:
- A concise summary of your Yellowdig participation, including:
- The core insight you shared in your initial post.
- The key point you contributed in your reply.
- The question you posed to classmates.
- A brief reflection (2 to 4 sentences) explaining:
- How drafting your Yellowdig post clarified, strengthened, or challenged any part of your analysis.
- How your discussion with a classmate influenced (or did not influence) your final conclusions.
- Appendix Requirement:
- Include the full text of your post and reply in the Appendix or your AI log.

- Executive Decision Deck with AI Transparency and Appendix
- Create an executive-level slide deck of up to 15 slides.
