Preparedness is the process of turning awareness of a natural disaster and risks faced by a community into actions that improve its capability to respond to and recover. Therefore, I would start with the basic protocols for reporting emergencies within the agency, evacuation policies, establish the names and titles of individuals who can provide further information, shutdown procedures, rescue and/or medical contacts and training for individuals within the agency(NA, Nd). I would also keep in mind that preparedness plans need to not only address the immediate response but the longer-term recovery and reconstruction as well. The recovery process is multifaceted and complex, which indicates a systematic approach could reduce human hardship.

Mitigation is actions to prevent and/or reduce the risk of life, property, social and economic activities, and natural resources from natural hazards. Many communities resist adopting mitigation programs. Therefore, a commitment from the community should be required along with the recognition of constraints and barriers and innovative solutions. An example could be an area that is flood-prone could be incorporated into wildlife and recreation attraction. Awareness and education programs will help foster the incorporation of lessons learned from disasters and findings from social research.

However, mitigation activities can and should be in place before a disaster, but hazard mitigation is vital after a disaster. There is a repetitive cycle that occurs after a disaster of getting the community back to normal. Hazard mitigation takes a long-term view of rebuilding stronger, safer, and smarter communities that are better able to reduce future damage and injuries (NA, City of Los Angeles, 2018).

The bible prophecies speak of disasters during the last days; 2 Timothy 3:1-2 (NIV) reads: But mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days. (2) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy. This is our country’s current state.
