Problem 3: Masonry HW

Estimate the amount of differential movement between a 4” exterior clay brick wythe and a 8” interior load-bearing concrete block wythe for a five-story noncomposite wall. Assume that the CMU wythe supports a vertical load of 1200 lbs./ft (all of it sustained) at each of the five floor levels. The height of the base story is equal to 15’-0” and the height of all other stories is equal to 10’-0”. For the concrete wythe, consider Em equal to 3000 ksi and the self weight to be equal to 30 lbs. per square foot of wall area. The block wythe is ungrouted and face-shell bedding is used. (the net area per running foot is 30 inches2). Refer to the MSJC code, or any other supporting research information.
