QUESTION

Problem and Solution

Please read and take handwritten notes on this essay: http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html

Once you are done I want you to think of a major problem facing the United States in 2017. Make sure you can provide solid evidence that your idea qualifies as a problem. For example, the opioid crisis qualifies as a problem since 33,000 Americans died from an overdose in 2015, quadruple the number that did in 1999. More evidence could be supplied to support this claim if needed. An idea like "Guys who wear their pants hanging down low" may be something that you personally don't like, but that doesn't mean it is a problem. A person's fashion choices aren't a problem--unless, of course, they cause thousands of deaths a year or take some other verifiable toll on society.

Once you are sure you have picked an actual problem, you will need to devise an absurd solution to the problem. In the eighteenth century in Ireland, Jonathan Swift proposed something quite absurd and ridiculous to solve the famine problem, and you will be doing the same in your time period and country. For example, you could decide to solve the problem of obesity. Since a third of all adults have obesity, and it can lead to a greater risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, it is definitely a problem. An absurd or ridiculous or not-realistic solution to this problem would be to send all the obese people to an island. In this bizarre world, they would be not able to come back until they were thin.

After you have your problem and proposal, post 350 words on the discussion board explaining your proposal and how it will eradicate the problem you are trying to solve. Do not discuss the problem you are trying to solve at length. At least 300 words must be dedicated to explaining the proposal and how it will work. Make sure you read what the syllabus has to say about discussion assignments so you do not miss any points here.
