ProcedureFollowing the recommendations of Morgan (1993) andWeber (1990), the first author: (a) read the transcripts severaltimes to gain a broad understanding of the text; (b)met with a group of qualitative researchers who reviewedtranscripts, identified key quotations, and discussed keycodes related to the research question; (c) combined thecoded quotations into one file and confirmed the accuracyof the code and quotation; (d) carefully read quotationfiles and, with the group, identified major themes byputting key coded quotations together for each researchquestion; (e) met with the group, reviewed major themes,and engaged in active dialogue to resolve any discrepancies;and (f) reviewed the transcripts and validated thestructure of themes alongside interview data.FindingsParticipants described their experiences of unexpectedand distressing symptoms in the years after breastcancer treatment. Symptoms included pain, loss of energy,impaired limb movement, cognitive disturbance,changed sexual experiences, and lymphedema. The fourcentral themes that were derived from the women’sexperiences of ongoing and unexpected symptomsincluded living with lingering symptoms, confrontingunexpected situations, losing precancer being, and feelinglike a has-been.
