Tony Harrison is an English poet. He was born in Leeds, England, In the county of Yorkshire. He won a scholarship. He went to a grammar school. His accent was different from the other children’s. His was a Yorkshire accent. They spoke with an educated accent. He was very unhappy. His teachers picked on him. Because of his accent. His father was a baker. His mother worked at home. He did well at school. He went on to university. He graduated with a first class degree. In the classics. He started to write poems. They dealt with his childhood. One sequence of poems is called School of Eloquence. He talks about the problems with his father. Who didn’t like his sons’ work. He didn’t understand it. Tony studied linguistics. He spoke Latin and Greek. He translated Molière. He translated for the New York Opera company. His plays did well. Even though they were translated. He has published a lot of books. Mostly poetry. He also did other work. He researched mystery plays. Some people were upset because he gave god a Yorkshire accent. He lives in Manhattan. He owns a house in London. And in Devon. Which is in the South of England. He is my favorite poet. I have all his books. Sometimes he uses foul language. In his poems. But he uses them for a purpose not to be rude the characters in his poems really speak like that they are very realistic. The reason being they are working class people. I think you would like his poems. Or some of them. They are very good.
