The flood of sensational propaganda in the First World War made a powerful psychological impact on the United States and tended to draw American sympathies to the Allied cause. In the years before radio and television, the large colorful posters hung in public areas were a highly effective form of propaganda, and Allied governments turned to them successfully in the years after 1914 to play upon American fears and concerns. The following images represent American propaganda produced after the declaration of war in April 1917. Click on an image to enlarge it. Look them over, and proceed to the exercise.
